Twillingate

Newfoundland.  The day started out raw and chilly.   Strong winds, rain, HAIL.  Oooh Canada, eh?  Fiona with her marvelously spinning eye wasn't even on the radar...🌀🌀.  We were warm and toasty inside Darwin.  Soooo nice in here 🔥...ahhhh   We may never be here again, and this giant rock, known as Newfoundland, is absolutely STUNNING in it's beauty.  So, we made a decision to run up to the coast to the small fishing village of Twillingate, try a couple of hikes, and visit the winery. And just like that, the day turned out to be extraordinary. The sun came out, the trails unfolded before us, leading us through the soft golden peat bogs to breathtaking views over the treacherous bluerock coastline (oh me nerves!), secluded black sand beaches, and scenic coves. Cucumbers Grow on Trees

These little green seed pods are all over the ground behind our house.   After a little research I figured out they were from the Cucumber Tree.  What?? Cucumbers on a tree??  I guess the pods just resemble a cucumber so hence the name.   Yes, they can be eaten.  Hm. Also known as the Shining Tree, they are considered an "at risk" endangered species in Canada. We have a small grove of them here by our house in Kentucky.  Looking at a map, I feel pretty lucky to have them in our yard.  And, they are beautiful, tall trees with large leaves, providing nice shade, and food for critters.   Maybe a cucumber salad is on the menu tonight!
